The three parts

The length of each part varies slightly by test form, which is why Pearson publishes ranges. The test is taken at a test center on a computer, with a headset and microphone.
The task types
Speaking and Writing opens with an unscored personal introduction, then covers:
- Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture and Answer Short Question.
- Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation — the two speaking tasks built on real-world communication.
- Summarize Written Text and Write Essay.
Reading has five: Reading and Writing Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice (multiple answers), Re-order Paragraphs, Reading Fill in the Blanks and Multiple Choice (single answer).
Listening has eight: Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple Choice (multiple answers), Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Multiple Choice (single answer), Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words and Write from Dictation.
Why one task can move two scores
PTE Academic scores skills in an integrated way. Repeat Sentence, for example, needs you to understand what you hear and then say it, so it contributes to both Listening and Speaking. Write from Dictation contributes to both Listening and Writing. Your overall score reflects performance across all the tasks, not an average of the four skill scores.
The practical consequence is that a few tasks carry more weight than their time on screen suggests. Tasks that feed two skills are worth practising until they are automatic.
Partial credit and negative marking
- Many tasks award partial credit — each correct blank, word or correctly ordered pair can earn a point.
- Multiple Choice (multiple answers) and Highlight Incorrect Words take a point away for each wrong selection, with a minimum of zero for the task. Only select what you are confident about.
- Speaking tasks are scored on content, oral fluency and pronunciation, so a smooth, complete answer with a small slip usually scores better than a hesitant, restarted one.
Scoring, results and validity
Pearson scores the test with AI combined with human review. Most test takers receive results within two business days, though some take up to five. A PTE Academic score is valid for two years from the test date.
Scores are reported on the Global Scale of English, from 10 to 90. The score a university or visa route requires varies, so check the requirement of each institution or immigration authority directly.
